Sperry Band of Pirates Again Sets New Record for District Achievements

Sperry Band, under the direction of Ms. Makayla West, has made something of a habit of breaking their own records for achievement. Most recently, 35 Sperry band students from 7th grade through 12th grade traveled to Wagoner on January 25th to audition for membership in the MEOBDA All-Region Honor Band. To be selected, students must audition and compete against 34 other schools ranging in size from Class B to 5A. The Band of Pirates had a great showing in the competition, with 27 students qualifying for a chair or as an alternate. Sperry Band’s previous record for this honor was to have 25 students qualify for a chair or alternate spot. This year, 14 students from 10th through 12th grade,  seven students from 8th and 9th grades, and six students from 7th grade earned a seat or as an alternate in the ensembles. Furthermore, four students outscored all others in their instrument/age group and earned a 1st chair top spot. The 27 Sperry MEOBDA All-Region Honor Band students will travel to Oolagah to prepare and perform with other selected students early in February.
