Sperry School Board Votes to Support Planned Teacher Walkout

March 13, 2018

Dear Sperry Patrons,

Everyone is probably aware that teachers across the state are planning a walkout starting on April 2nd if the Legislature fails to meet an April 1st funding deadline.  This line in the sand comes after shouldering the consequences of ten years of reduced funding for education with no increases in the state’s pay scale for teachers.

It is the hope of the Sperry Board of Education and Administration that a statewide teacher walkout can be avoided, but we are ready to support our teachers if they collectively determine a walkout is necessary.  Furthermore, we urge the Legislature to find a dedicated source of revenue to fund these long overdue needs.

We also recognize a walkout will cause temporary difficulties for families; however, continuing with inaction is likely to facilitate the Legislature’s established pattern of underfunding education.  Weighing these options, the Sperry Board of Education voted unanimously at their March 12th regular meeting to allow the Superintendent to suspend school and revise the 2017-2018 school calendar as may be required in the event of a statewide teacher walkout in protest of the Legislature’s failure to adequately fund public education.

I encourage the Sperry community to contact our State Representatives and State Senators to urge them to prevent this walkout by financially committing to the future of our children.

We will continue to monitor the situation, make appropriate plans, and inform our patrons as this situation develops.

Respectfully,

Brian Beagles, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
