MYON READING

Beginning May 17th, Sperry Middle School student have access to a personalized literacy environment designed to help them learn to read and love to read. Students took an interest inventory and answered question based on the interests and were given a Lexile score. The Lexile Framework for Reading is a scientific approach to measuring reading ability and the text demand of reading materials. The Lexile Framework involves a scale for measuring both reading ability of an individual and the text complexity of materials he or she encounters. The Lexile scale is like a thermometer, except rather than measuring temperature, the Lexile Framework measures a text’s complexity and a reader’s skill level.

With their Lexile score, students will have access to thousands of books in the MYON database. Students will have 24/7 access to these books. Students can read online on any web-enabled device, including tablets, notebooks, and desktop computers. Students will also be able to download up to 20 books at a time to read when not online. There is a FREE mobile app for iPads, Android devices, Chromebooks and Kindle Fire HD.

The Middle School will have a host of reading challenges next year. For example, the Middle School student reading the most books this summer, MYON reading program is going to give him/her a $50 gift card! I hope you will encourage your child to read this summer and take advantage of this program.
