Sperry High School Marching Band Marches Through Regionals

Sperry Band Marches Through Regionals With All “1s”

Tuesday, October 11, Sperry Marching Band traveled to Skiatook for the OSSAA 3A Marching Band Regional Competition.  The year began with strong scores and that pattern has only grown as the year progresses.  At Regionals, the Marching Band scored all 1s on the field and the Flag ensemble followed up with a top score as well.

“It’s a Champion day,” Band Director Mrs. Alane King said.  “Sperry Marching Band and Color Guard once again ruled the field.”

The success at Regionals should certainly have come to Mrs. King and the band members as no surprise, since they have had a strong showing at competitions since August.  On Saturday, October 8, Sperry Marching Band participated in the Cleveland Invitational Marching Contest, taking Best in Class.  They were 3rd in Band Totals, 2nd with Percussion, and 1st in Color Guard.

Sperry High School Band competed at Verdigris September 29 in a marching contest.  A total of 12 bands competed, performing their best for a three-judge panel.  Sperry Band received the highest marks from all three judges, scores of 1 from each, and received an overall rating of Superior.

"The entire band played well, and I am again so proud of them, one and all," Mrs. King said.  "They make their hours and hours of hard work and continued practice pay off."

Other Band Accomplishments this year include their first state competition of the year, at which Sperry High School Band started the school year by bringing trophies home with them.  At the 65th Annual Oklahoma State Fair Band Day Competition held on Monday, September 19, Sperry Band once again showed their peers across the state they play with all their heart, and they play to win.  There were 49 nine bands in the competition divided into their OSSAA classifications, ranging from 2A through 6A.  Sperry High School Band is in the 3A Division, which consisted of 18 bands mainly from western Oklahoma.  There are 3 areas of competition:  Band, Percussion and Color Guard.

In the Percussion category, Sperry placed first in class receiving a first place trophy and $75.

Mrs. King noted, “These kids are amazing.  They were one of the smallest bands in their division and yet they just stepped up in the faces of the big groups.  They have the outlook of the little train that could.  I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
