Sperry Softball Finishes Season at 3A Regionals

Two wins separated Sperry High School's softball team from a trip to the Class 3A State Tournament.

But the Lady Pirates, who finished the season with a record of 21-20, had a great season in 2017 and hope to repeat and exceed their performance in 2018.

"We had a great and enjoyable season," Lady Pirates coach Cole Fancher said. "The girls got better and better as the season went along. We won districts and had a chance to win regionals but we fell just short of that."

The Lady Pirates faced host Verdigris in the first round of Regionals and fell 10-0 to the Lady Cardinals. Sperry then went to the losers bracket and eliminated Kansas in a 5-11 game. The Lady Pirates then had to defeat Verdigris twice to advance to State. Sperry trailed just 1-0 heading into the sixth inning before Verdigris took control of the game and eliminated the Lady Pirates' chance of going to State.  The second match up with Verdigris ended in a 8-1 score in Verdigris' favor.

"We played well but Verdigris is not the second-ranked team in the state by accident," Coach Fancher said. "Our girls hung in there but in the end you have to tip your caps to Verdigris. They're a solid team."

Seniors Hydee Williamson and Vanessa England played their last games in the Sperry orange and black. They will be sorely missed.

"It will be hard to replace the leadership Vanessa and Hydee provided for our team," Fancher said. "We have strong juniors that will be seniors next year. I expect them to step up and provide next year's team strong leadership as well."
