Sperry High School Welcomes New Principal
Sperry High School’s office has a new face—Mr. Randy Shaw. Mr. Shaw is stepping in as Principal and Athletic Director, on the heels of the retirement of Mr. Mike Haney. Mr. Shaw has served as a teacher, coach, elementary and high school principal, and athletic director.
“Mr. Shaw has experience in both positions he has taken on,” Sperry Superintendent Dr. Brian Beagles said, “and he worked with Mr. Haney during his last weeks with the district in order to make the transition as smooth as it can be. When classes begin in August, I am sure Mr. Shaw will already feel quite at home in our school community.”
In fact, in just his first few weeks with the district, Mr. Shaw has done much to feel quite at home at Sperry in both of his administrative roles. He has already conducted interviews to fill teaching and coaching positions, worked on scheduling of classes with high school counselor and has reviewed the academic trends of the district’s EOI and ACT scores. He has also begun the daunting task of creating schedules for each one of the district’s more than 350 high school students.
Mr. Shaw said, “My goals are that we have a high graduation rate, that those students graduate in their scheduled four years, and that all those graduates are prepared for college or careers of their choosing. On the athletic front, our athletes should expect their coaches to help each of them to excel and that each game is played to win.”
Dr. Beagles approves of Mr. Shaw’s dual focus on academics and athletics. “It’s a difficult balance,” Dr. Beagles said, “but it is imperative to keep students in as rigorous an instructional environment as they can handle and still be successful. That’s a balance that is necessary if we are to assure our students are prepared for college courses or are ready to step directly into a career within which they can advance in the years to come. Both the academic and athletic opportunities at Sperry High School will ensure our students also have the foundations to take on the responsibilities that come with citizenship. I believe Mr. Shaw is capable of meeting these expectations, and he will encourage our students to be the best they can be.”
